Matthew 10:32-38 (NLT)

32 “Everyone who acknowledges me publicly here on earth, I will also acknowledge before my Father in heaven. 33 But everyone who denies me here on earth, I will also deny before my Father in heaven.

34 “Don’t imagine that I came to bring peace to the earth! I came not to bring peace, but a sword.

35 ‘I have come to set a man against his father,
    a daughter against her mother,
and a daughter-in-law against her mother-in-law.

36 "Your enemies will be right in your own household!’

37 “If you love your father or mother more than you love me, you are not worthy of being mine; or if you love your son or daughter more than me, you are not worthy of being mine. 38 If you refuse to take up your cross and follow me, you are not worthy of being mine.

It’s amazing the emotion that is evoked with the one small word, “Home.”  We all long for Home to be a place of consistency, comfort, support, understanding, unconditional love and acceptance.  Things tend to get complicated when the “age of innocence” comes to and end and all the sudden very different and even opposing ideals begin to emerge within one’s own family.  We are not all on the same page, nor do we agree.

It can be heartbreaking to see family actually move from the heart position of no longer celebrating each other, but simply tolerating each other.  Unfortunately, it can get worse as Jesus reveals in v36 above, and spiritual war can break out in our homes, and family can become our enemy.

It all comes down to what you have done with this man, Jesus.  If you belong to Him and He belongs to you, you have drawn a line in the spirit that puts you on the front line of attack with every other human who refuses to deal with this God-Man, Jesus Christ.  This Man, Jesus, who says He is the Son of God, who came and lived a spotless life to offer Himself as the only sacrifice that cleanses all who trust Him from their sin, and presents us washed and forgiven to God is at the very core of the issue.  Those realities of what a Christian believes about Him, are fighting terms to the unbeliever, and we are thrust into this intense battle of the ages that will not cease or lighten up until the final hour is at hand.  Truth will be revealed, and believers will be rewarded and received into Heaven to live with God forever because of the precious blood of Jesus that has qualified us to receive our inheritance.  These words I speak provoke the godless to hostility no matter who they are.

Home on earth is fragile, vulnerable, and complicated.  Not all in your Home will agree with your convictions, and you should not be shocked when war breaks out.  Keep your heart strong, and never turn your back on God.  Love your family, but they do not deserve your worship.  You allegiance is first to the One and Only who freed you from your sin and gave you a new heart.  He is your Home.
