Wendy stared back at me with eyes that were pleading for understanding. I meant well. I was sincere. I was the living, breathing version of ritual. I had asked her, so often, "What do you want to do, today? Where do you want to go?" She'd noticed that I had allowed my relationship with her to become an agenda; a list of expectations that I could check-off. On this morning, her answer reached my heart where it 's been lodged ever since.
"I don't want to tell you what I want to do, today. I don't want to tell where I want to go, today. Today, I just want you to be with me."
It's easy for me to derail my relationship with Jesus right into a routine. "Where do You want me to go, today? What do You want me to do?" I mean well.
How often I've heard the precious Spirit of the Lord, through eyes pleading for understanding, "Today, Art, I just want you to be with Me." I've discovered that when I walk in genuine fellowship and friendship with Jesus, it all gets done. I go where He wants me to go. I meet who He wants me to meet. I learn what He wants me to do.
"Father in heaven, never let me see You as a ritual nor allow our relationship to become a routine. You are the Living God and I honor Your power and treasure Your presence in my life. In Jesus' name, amen."
