"One thing I have asked of the Lord, and that I will seek: That I may dwell in the house of the Lord [in His presence] all the days of my life, to gaze upon the beauty [the delightful loveliness and majestic grandeur] of the Lord, and to meditate in His temple." ~ Psalm 27:4 (AMP)
I couldn't fathom why Wendy wasn't excited! "Don't you understand?" I asked, "We're going to Disneyland!" I enjoyed the experience of the Magic Kingdom, growing up in SoCal. I thought everyone would be thrilled to arrive at the "Mouse-Eared Gates." I was mistaken.
If you know my Steel Magnolia, you'll understand her lack of enthusiasm. "I've seen the beauty and the glory of God, Art. I'm not impressed with Disneyland." Though temporarily deflated in my childish memories, I quickly concurred. What I realized is the significant difference between short-term pleasure and long-term fulfillment.
Sometimes, I'm like the dog chasing the car: What will I do if I ever catch it? Have you ever sacrificed long-term fulfillment for short-term satisfaction? I've thought that a certain purchase or a particular experience would bring fulfillment only to realize, with disappointment, I was satisfied only for a brief moment. The quests that are tied to your destiny, these are the ones that fulfill your heart and calm your soul. All others may be enjoyable but temporary at best.
Is it possible that the few precious things that are genuinely worth the investment of your energy, time, and pursuit are within you? Your fellowship with Jesus? Growing in God's Word? Learning how to authentically live the resurrected life because you learned the ways of the cross? Though they are on the more challenging path, these are things that bring deep, long-term fulfillment. They're a part of who you're becoming in the fulfillment of your destiny. They are worth your attention and enthusiasm.
