What's Your Aim?

"Then John testified, “I saw the Holy Spirit descending like a dove from heaven and resting upon Him."  ~  John 1:32 (NLT)

As a kid, my buddies and I gathered rocks as ammunition to fire at doves and pigeons with our wrist-rockets.  Sadly, we hit a few.  But most of them we would just drive away.

This image is brought to my memory, many times, by God's Precious Spirit.  It's a perfect demonstration of how I respond to the temptation to sin.  In the moment of the lure, I imagine myself picking up a rock and loading it into my slingshot.  Now, with eyes wide-open, I choose:  Do I send the rock sailing toward the dove, revealing that I would rather have my own way than God's?  Or, do I realize what the true cost is and simply return the rock to dirt and walk on in the sweet, promised presence of Jesus.

For the child of God, nothing is more heartbreaking than breaking fellowship with Jesus.  Sin may be pleasurable for a moment but it never satisfies.  Never.  Nothing and no one will ever fulfill the longings of your heart as only the presence of Jesus can.  Don't let the empty promises of sin drive Him away.
