"Above all, taking the shield of faith with which you will be able to quench all the fiery darts of the wicked one." ~ Ephesians 6:16
The shield that Paul is teaching us about will stop every fiery dart of your enemy. What's important is that you have the right shield. The soldier, in Paul's day, had two: one for boasting, the other for battle.
The shield for show, given to the soldier upon enlistment, is small, shiny and ornate and...useless in battle.
The shield the soldier counts on to save his life is very different and unique.
It is a "thureos." This is the greek word for door. This shield is tall and wide. It's as big as a door and shields the entire man.
It's made by the soldier himself, layer-by-layer of leather. It is a long process that is part of the journey of training and preparation to engage in effective warfare.
Before a battle, (in our case, daily!), the shield is saturated in water. This increases it's density and weight and quenches fiery darts.
The principles of faith are pretty and look really good on you! However, the faith that is the victory is the "spirit of faith." Don't go into battle with a shield that looks good but is completely ineffective. Don't go into battle with a shield that's dry and light. Spend time in communion with the Spirit of God. Worship Him. Pray. Yield. Go. Go into battle with your shield saturated by the Spirit of the Living God! He makes ALL the difference!
