“Arthur, do not eat that candy before dinner! It’ll ruin your appetite!” Did you hear something similar as you were growing up? There’s some truth to it, isn’t there? At that moment, I’m not thinking about the good meal that’s being prepared for me. All I’m thinking about is the chocolate and marshmallow in my hand!
I’ve been asked by many over the years, “Why don’t I enjoy reading God’s Word?” “Why does it seem that I have no desire to pray or study the Bible?” On a much larger scale, we’re seeing a significant decline in our generations’ hunger for the authenticity of God and His Ways. I always think back to these words of instruction from my mom.
It’s possible that you’re ruining your appetite. If you’re lacking in hunger for the presence of God or if your passion for His Word is waning, here are a few recommendations:
- Put God’s presence and Word first. Before you begin your day and become engaged with others and other things, take the time to pray, worship God and let Him speak to you through His Word.
- Don’t fill up on junk. The shelves of our daily lives are stacked high with “junk food.” It’s in stores, coffee shops, the internet, everywhere! Before you know, hours have passed and all you’ve really digested is the distractions and delusions of this world.
- Ask God to restore and increase your spiritual hunger for His abiding presence and Word in your heart. He’ll cause your desire for Him to become insatiable. He’ll bless you with a hunger for His Word that can silence every craving of this world! He has promised…“they shall be filled.”
